On Nov 10th, our beloved hedgehog Kit lost his battle to what we believe was testicular cancer. Thankfully he passed peacefully in his sleep inside of his favorite pink hideout. The person I received him from had given it to me because he loved it more than his siblings.
Kit got his name from his striking resemblance to Grumpy Cat. Kit loved his snuggles in his kangaroo pouch. After all, a hedgehog’s favorite pass time is sleeping! If you were looking for him, you were most likely to find him napping away in his pouch on my lap.
He came into my life as a wee prickly baby of just about a month old! At this time, he was smaller than my hand. When he grew to full size, I needed two hands to hold him; he was a big boy! Kit was always hesitant to meet new people, but after a few sniffs, he was comfortable enough to take a nap right on their lap. With the warmth his body gave off, you would’ve never needed a blanket! He also enjoyed making himself cozy in his big brother Koda’s fluffy belly although, neither of the dogs may have been too keen about this prickly invader; they were sure to always check in on him.
Kit’s favorite time was ALWAYS bath-time. He might not have liked the actual bath part- but the warm towel snuggles that come after and then best of all getting to throw all of his fresh cage fluff around and burrow all around, even though he couldn’t tell me, he was always excited for this. I knew he was thanking me for the nice clean cage. He also enjoyed car rides and running through the grass outside. He sometimes tolerated being held on his back and when he did, he loooved stretching his long skinny noodle legs all the way out. His nose was always bouncing up and down, trying to catch all the smells, and he would always lick it with his little tongue; it was impossible to get a picture of him sitting still. A hedgehog’s amazing sense of smell is how they make up for almost being blind, and smell and voice are how they recognize their favorite people.. or someone trying to hand them mealworms.
Kit enjoyed spending time with my brother Jayson, and on Sundays when my cousin Leena would come over and spoil him with attention.
He may also be recognized as @kitthegrumpyhedge on TikTok. He tried to make it big, unfortunately, we only had one video that went viral, but it was good enough for him.
Kit was truly a one of a kind, grouchy boy, and he will be missed dearly by all.
